The Season Is Open

With great anticipation, the long awaited day has finally come OPENING DAY of the 2010 - 2011 sea duck season. As expected things have started off in grand style. Large numbers of all three species of scoters ( surf, white-winged, and black ) along with great eider numbers have once again graced our region of the downeast coast of Maine, allowing us world class layout gunning right out of the gate.

Eiders headed for the layout

As the weather is starting to cool, we have noticed the arrival of the longtails. With each passing day our guides are reporting that they are seeing more of these fantastic birds daily. By the time most of you read this blog we will have gunable numbers here for the rest of the season. For many of our hunters these birds put the topping on there Maine sea duck hunting experience.

The early puddle duck season was one of the best in many years. With the warm fall weather hanging on longer than usual, our teal and wood duck populations were up and provided us with above average gunning. Black duck numbers in the downeast region are stronger than anywhere in the state. Gunning these birds is always a challange but very rewarding and leaves us looking forward to the late season when the migrators come down from the maritimes

From putting a fresh coat of paint on older decoys to the finishing touches on  the new rigs that were built in the decoy shop this past off season. The checking of long lines, lanyards, anchors, minor revisions to layout boats and main boats the list goes on and on. These tasks may seem to a burden to some outfitters...but not for us here at Rising Sun Outfitters for this is our way of life !
